An Operational Interview with the actress Rupo Huq.
An actress of the Indian soap opera theatre, Rupoi Huq is the latest in a line of female stars to become an icon for the movement of the world’s first transgender star.
In an interview with The Hindu, Ruppi, 24, spoke about how the world has moved away from gender stereotypes and how her identity as a trans woman has been accepted.
Rupo, whose real name is Rupu Srinivasan, was born in Mumbai, India, in 1991.
Her parents were divorced when she was five years old.
Her family were living in a rented house in Mumbai’s Mysuru locality, but she chose to move to Kolkata to live with her aunt.
She has a son and a daughter, who are now all grown up.
Ruppi says she was not very interested in acting at first.
However, after studying at the Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai and pursuing a degree in theatre and acting at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in New Delhi, she decided to go to London.RUPO SAYS THAT THE WORLD HAS MOVED AWAY FROM GENDER STEREOTYPES, AND SHE HAS BEEN INTERVIEWED ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR HER TRANS-FAMILY.RUPAI WAS IN LONDON IN MAY 2016 FOR THE MOST PART, WHEN HER ACTING CAREER HAD ENDED.
But she says that she wanted to keep acting for as long as possible, because she wanted it to be an important part of her identity.
“I want to continue to show what I can do,” she says.
In a time when trans visibility is on the rise in India, RUPO says, people are also struggling with how to understand trans people.
“A lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about trans people,” she explains.
“There are a lot more misconceptions in the entertainment industry, because there is a lot less understanding and acceptance of trans people in the mainstream media than there is for trans people.”
She says that there is still a lot that needs to be done.
“The biggest thing is that we need to get our stories out there.
It’s not easy.
It has been hard for me.
I have had a lot going on.”RUPOO SAYS THE WORLD DOESN’T WANT TO SEE TRANS WOMEN IN CHARGE.
“We have to get the message out to the world that we are not just the other gender,” she adds.
“It’s time to get back to normal.”
