When will the market garden open?
- August 8, 2021
The new market garden will open on Wednesday, with the government planning to open it to the public for the first time on Tuesday, April 25.
It is expected to be open to the general public at 3.30pm.
The launch of the market is being seen as a major coup for Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who was elected in December, and the Labor Party.
But it also comes after weeks of political wrangling over the exact details of how it will be run.
A new federal Government will be formed in early June.
Opposition leader Bill Shorten said the decision to open the market to the market community would have to wait until after the next election.
“We are not expecting a lot of government money going into the market.
We have to remember that this is a new Government,” Mr Shorten told ABC News Breakfast on Monday.”
The government is not going to spend $1 billion on the market for the next two years.”
The market garden has been set up as a test of the Government’s commitment to reducing Australia’s carbon emissions and has attracted a large community of recreational and gardeners who say it will provide them with the chance to make their own decisions about where they spend their money.
In the first year of operation, the market gardens will be open from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
There will also be a limited number of farmers markets across the country from March.
The market gardens are expected to bring more than $200 million to the local economy, with more than 3,000 stalls across the state, and more than 40,000 square metres of market space.
The markets will also allow more than 50,000 people to buy and sell goods from their own garden, including fresh vegetables and fruits.
The new market will be a “key part” of the State Government’s ambitious plan to reduce emissions and achieve its target of 100 per cent emissions reduction by 2030.
